We made slime…

So we are members of Publix’s Preschool Pals and they sent this neat idea to make your own stretch putty. P has been on a science kick recently and this activity was a perfect fit. With very few ingredients –

slimeingrediants.
Borax (I didn’t know they still made it) & glue & food coloring

you can make this -

wemadeslime

How cool is that? It was slimy and squishy. You mix the ingredients separately with water and then combine them and they bubble up nicely.

It made for an interesting experiment (though t was not a fan :-) ).

“Thus grew the tale of Wonderland: …”

“Thus slowly, one by one,
Its quaint events were hammered out”

Some days are just golden (like the Golden Afternoon excerpt). They are a magical break from the everyday. From work, school, sick mommas, bickering kids, driving in traffic and the usual errand runs it is nice to break off from that. It doesn’t have to be at Disney but this time we were.

It's Stitch

We took this MLK holiday to go to Epcot on a great princess hunt. P had gotten a fabulous scrapbook for Christmas from Hampshire Rose (awesome, awesome Etsy Store – she is fabulous to work with) and she wanted to get signatures in it. Tamsin just wanted to burn off energy. Despite me sounding like a seal (sinus infection and asthma issues – oh hello allergies), we went ready to conquer the day. I must have looked terrible because everyone was super nice to us and Patrick joined us despite having tons of calls. We saw Stitch and Daisy right away.

Learned incorrect facts on Spaceship Earth (Egyptians are not the group who invented writing…), found hidden Mickey’s in Mexico (can you see it?)

Gave special handmade cards to Jasmine. Saw a ton of princesses (including Snow White) to sign the book…

even saw Mary Poppins (she was delightful)!

But especially, I got to step out of the everyday mommy role and just be. I got to see their faces light up with glee…

got to explore the stars and sea. Answer a million questions about how and why things work and get to be a superstar momma because I knew the answers. It was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious…

And home we steer, a merry crew,
Beneath the setting sun.”

3 is a magic number…

Cake!

Even if you claim to alternately be 4 or 7 (depends on who asks and when). Can’t believe T is three, though at the same time it is hard to remember life without her.

This big girl has lots of personality

DSC_4605

She says lots of insightful and funny things…like knowing how to use the word “crap” in a sentence with the right intention (yes, I had to walk out of the room because I was laughing so hard).

Oh…and at 3 she’s got a Brooklyn accent (perhaps because she’s a Poppa’s girl) – says “boys and gourls…” for example. It’s very very funny.

Happy 3rd Birthday (or Bourth-day, as she says) to the sweetest Tamsin we know.

Arrggh…Cap’n T turns 3!

“Avast, ahoy, aye, aye…” Tamsin turned 3 (another post on how we can’t believe that!) and we celebrated in pirate style.

The zip line provided lots of practice for future flying up ship rigging :-)

Of course, there was a craft. Decorating pirates and then pinning them to a treasure map.

Then spinning kiddos (just one time but poor Gavin walked into pole).

And then all the pirates :-)

Then some Pirate Grog, Edible Doubloons (to help with scurvy – oranges), Sea Biscuits (pretzels), Pirate Rations (pizza), and fish (goldfish and gummy fish) helped refuel the pirates before cake.

And then the part that T was most excited about – cake (for the past few weeks she’s said “It’s my birthday next and I get cake right?”).

Again, Cafe Patisserie in Lake Mary did such a great job on the cake.

DSC_4598darkvintage

ha, ha, ha…ohhhhh…….Christmas lights, Christmas lights, we went looking at Christmas lights.”

Okay, so I may have stretched that song reference out a bit, but I had been working on it in my head for a few days. One night recently, we at dinner early, got the girls all ready for bed and went riding around DeBary to look at Christmas lights.

DSC_4599 vtaction

It was a lot of fun – definitely a do again evening for next year!

Children were nestled…

all snug in their beds…

Nestled and snug

while visions of goats danced in their heads. Yes, I said goats! We spent a great Christmas Eve visiting the Schneiders at the lake house.

The girls got to see Grampy’s goats & offer them branches of leaves to eat.

Here goats...here goats

Tamsin did not want to let her branch go.

They also got to spend time with Uncle Robbie (who they have not gotten to see in awhile and he was so patient with them and the puppies – thanks Robbie!); as well as Grandma & Grandpa Schneider.

There was copious amounts of presents…

Where's Tamsin - oh that little sneaking hand at the top
Can you tell they are the only grandkids?

My favorite were GrammiAmi’s quiet bags – neat bags filled with craft items, small toys, all kinds of things to keep the girls occupied for a bit. :)

Then we headed to church to the family service. Normally, we go to the toddler service but this year we were brave and headed the older kids service.

Aland girls

It was very exciting because there were lots of familiar songs, the Christmas story from Luke, and the favorite part – candles.

Rules of holding a lit candle
Patrick explaining the rules of candles, never tilt them, don’t whack your sister, etc.

It was a sweet memory, despite being burned with hot wax from an accidental splashing.

Hope your Christmas Eve was Merry and Bright and to all a good night!!!

Treats for friends

To go along with our Etsy business idea (just kidding!)…here are some of the treats for friends we’ve made. I know it seems nutty but we love to bake and craft together, and we are trying really hard to instill a gracious spirit in the girls – part of that being giving of self and time not just things. So we’ve made cookies – lots of cookies…

Ginger spice cookies
Ginger ones are my favorite – might do a post with the recipe, they are so yummy! Great blend of sweet & spice and crisp edges with a chewy middle.

We’ve made pretzels, pretzel stacks, cards – a million cards (feels like it), ornaments and gift tags and then for school friend’s peppermint hot cocoa. This idea was adapted from something I saw on Pintrest (so addictive).

DSC_4576

Tamsin pengiun cocoa

Girls had lots and lots of fun making them, perhaps a little too much fun eating the ingredients, but at least this sugar rush will end soon – right?

DSC_4573

DSC_4574

In case you are curious, super easy to make.

DSC_4571

1/4 of a cup of hot cocoa mix (I got a large tin at BJ’s) and add in various toppings. We had peppermint bits, mini chocolate chips, and marshmallows. But toppings can be whatever strikes your fancy. Just try to layer in each topping separately and do not shake up the bag everywhere all over the kitchen :-) .

Family traditions for a tree

I love that we are at a stage where our tree can be covered in handmade ornaments. It makes all the artwork that comes home from school have a purpose and a place (rather than just the art wall for a time). Handmade ornaments become a part of our family tradition and history. On our tree, I have an ornament that my dad made out of scraps from my grandmother’s fabric basket when he was in high school. Now, these ornaments can join in our family history (these are all made by P, Tamsin’s creations were a little less this December as she got very sick and missed a lot of school)…

Magical time at the Magic Kingdom

Poppy, Tamsin, Mia & I spent a girls afternoon at the Magic Kingdom enjoying the decorations and magic of Disney during the holidays.

Artsy view of Magic Kingdom Tree & P

It was a Tuesday afternoon so the park was relatively empty and we got to do lots of Fantasy Land rides in a short period of time. The carousel was a huge favorite

and we got to ride Winnie the Pooh twice (the line was too short to actually enjoy the fun garden and honey painting walls that are part of the waiting area).

How Tamsin viewed the Winnie the Pooh ride
Love this, because this is how Tamsin viewed every ride.

We even got to see the Stone girls and have dinner with them & ride It’s a Small World (song in your head now??) together before heading out.

Just a nice Christmas memory. Definitely magical…
